Houston Texans quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been designated to return from injured reserve, but coach David Culley said Wednesday he won’t rush him back into action.
Taylor missed the past five games with a strained hamstring, and rookie Davis Mills started in his absence.
The Texans (1-6) will host the Los Angeles Rams (6-1) on Sunday.
“As far as the game, that’s still up in the air right now.”
Culley said Mills would work with the first team at practice Wednesday.
“Tyrod, we’re just easing him back into practice just to see where he’s at. Tyrod is a veteran. He’s been around here,” Culley said. “He doesn’t have to have all the reps. Davis needs the reps, and Davis is going to be playing this week as our starting quarterback, and right now, he is.”
Culley said, however, that Taylor could start against the Rams even with limited practice if he progresses nicely during the week.
The Texans could use an offensive spark.
With Taylor running the offense, Houston gained 449 yards in a 37-21 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1. He was injured in Week 2, a 31-21 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
On the season, the Texans have been outscored 203-97.
