Nick Caserio could leave the Houston Texans, be replaced by 49ers assistant

Nick Caserio’s tenure as the Houston Texans’ general manager has not necessarily gone swimmingly. Replacing former head coach and personnel guy Bill O’Brien back in January of 2021, Caserio was thrown into the fire.

That included the former New England Patriots assistant having to navigate through Deshaun Watson trade demands and accusations from north of 20 women of sexual misconduct on the part of the now Cleveland Browns quarterback.

On the field, Houston has posted a 7-26-1 record with Caserio calling the shots in the front office. That could now soon come to an end.

Houston Texans insider John McClain noted recently that there were rumors during last month’s league meetings that Caserio could leave the Texans’ organization and return to New England. He had spent two decades working with Bill Belichick in New England prior to taking the Texans’ job.

Meanwhile, NFL insider Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle reported on Thursday that San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters could be a target of the Texans.

Having Nick Caserio oversee the 2023 NFL Draft wouldn’t really make much sense if he were to just depart shortly thereafter. Then again, the Texans’ scouting department and front office has put in all of the work. If Peters were to make his way to Houston from San Francisco before the draft, it would create all sorts of issues for both organizations.

Houston boasts the second and 12th overall picks in the 2023 NFL Draft. It had been linked to top quarterbacks Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud up until recently. Now, it’s not a foregone conclusion that the Texans will use that second pick on a signal caller. Though, this seems to be more of a smoke screen than anything else. Davis Mills is not the answer in Houston. Everyone within the organization knows this, Nick Caserio included.

The interesting thing here is Houston being linked to the aforementioned Adam Peters. He joined the 49ers’ organization as a vice president of player personnel before being promited to assistant general manager. Peters is seen as one of the up-and-coming personnel guys in the league and has played a huge role in turning San Francisco into an annual Super Bowl contender.

It also must be noted that Peters has a built-in relationship with new Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans. The latter joined Kyle Shanahan’s staff back in 2017 and took over for Robert Saleh as defensive coordinator in 2021.
