Jacksonville Jaguars interested in Doug Pederson and Jim Caldwell for next head coach

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars hired a head coach in the 2020 offseason. Here we are, nearly a year later and the organization has to begin its search for another new coach after firing Urban Meyer. This time around, they may opt for more NFL experience in the form of Doug Pederson or Jim Caldwell.

Making an appearance on NFL Gameday on NFL Network, Ian Rapoport mentioned how the Jaguars have an interest in interviewing both former coaches.

Pederson, who won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in his second season coaching the team in 2017, has a career 42-37-1 coaching record in the NFL. Fired after a 4-11-1 finish in 2020, Pederson is not coaching at any level in 2021, choosing to take a year off instead.

Now, the former quarterback is looking to get back into the league, as a head coach and there’s been a lot of recent momentum as teams search for an experienced leader.

Jacksonville Jaguars also intrigued by former Colts coach Jim Caldwell

Another coach with even more victories under his belt is former Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell. Fired from his role with the Lions after back-to-back 9-7 seasons, Caldwell has a career 62-50 coaching record in the NFL.

Caldwell was out of the league in 2018 before taking a position with the Miami Dolphins in 2019 as their assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach.

Like Pederson, Caldwell has also been a part of a Super Bowl-winning team, only Caldwell has done so twice, with two different organizations. In 2006, he helped the Colts win Super Bowl XLI and in 2012 he helped the Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII.

For the Jacksonville Jaguars, both coaches would represent a veteran leader who has been to the biggest stage, which is what they were after when hiring Meyer, it just didn’t work out. Pivoting to either Pederson or Caldwell would be a nice consolation prize after striking out with Meyer.
