A new report about the Las Vegas Raiders plans in Round 1 of the NFL Draft may have left the door wide open for the Seattle Seahawks to keep the state’s best football prospect in Washington for the foreseeable future.

The 2024 NFL Draft is finally here and Round 1 of the annual event kicks off tonight in Detroit. Heading into the draft there has been a lot of speculation about what the Seattle Seahawks could do with their top pick. The popular idea is for the team to take a signal-caller with their top selection, however, they may miss out on the top quarterback prospects this year.

Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., JJ McCarthy are seen as the top five QBs in this year’s class and many think they could be off the board in the top 15 picks. Unfortunately for the Seahawks, they are in the 16 spot of the NFL Draft order.

But a new report has made recent speculation linking Seattle to Washington Huskies star Michael Penix Jr. a little more realistic heading into Round 1. On Thursday afternoon, Seahawks beat reporter Gregg Bell revealed that Las Vegas Raiders reporter Vic Tarfur believes the team would pass on Penix Jr. when they pick at 13. The reason is the two-year, $25 million investment they made to Gardner Minshew in March.

The Raiders are the last team in the top 15 ahead of Seattle that was expected to take a quarterback, however, this may clear a major hurdle to allow the Seahawks to draft a talented QB who could replace Geno Smith this season or next.

Penix Jr.’s stock has been on the rise over the last month and he has gone from a likely second-round pick to a player that has the potential to go at some point in the first half of Round 1 on Thursday.
