Bill Belichick explains why he skipped Robert Kraft’s wedding

Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft welcomed more than 200 guests to his wedding on Oct. 14, with Tom Brady, Elton John, Meek Mill and Roger Goodell among those in attendance. However, Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick did not show up to the wedding of the franchise’s long-time owner.

As detailed by Peter King of NBC Sports, Kraft’s wedding to 47-year-old doctor Dana Blumberg, brought countless celebrities to the celebration. Many former Patriots, including Drew Bledsoe and Randy Moss, along with celebrities such as Kenny Chesney, Ed Sheeran and Jon Bon Jovi made it out to celebrate Kraft and his new bride.

Belichick’s absence from the wedding raised some questions. Following Sunday’s win over the Cleveland Browns, Belichick addressed his absence when asked about it on WEEI-FM, New England’s sports radio station. The future Hall of Famer offered a simple explanation, stating that he was too busy preparing to face the Browns but he talked to Kraft and the Patriots owner supported the decision.

“Sorry I missed it. I’m very happy for him.”

Belichick might have had the right idea. After attending the wedding on Friday, Brady missed practice with the Buccaneers and then completed just 25-of-40 attempts in a 20-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was one of his worst performances of the season as the 45-year-old completed only 62.5% of his passes with a 58.3 QBR.

Meanwhile, Belichick’s team delivered a 38-15 victory over Cleveland as a wedding gift to Kraft. The Patriots’ defense controlled the game, allowing just 328 total yards and 15 points with four takeaways. Just as important, the offense looked good for the third consecutive week.

Kraft will certainly be happy with the outcome. He enjoyed a weekend filled with a celebration that was surrounded by an A-list of celebrities. While Brady, Meek Bill and Elton John might have provided more lucrative wedding gifts, a blowout win over the Browns and a winning streak from Belichick’s team is plenty valuable to Kraft.
