Ahead of their Week 6 matchup taking place Sunday at 1:00 PM ET, Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Wink Martindale had a unique way of describing Los Angeles Chargers’ quarterback Justin Herbert‘s arm strength.
Specifically, Martindale stated about Herbert “He’s one of those guys who can throw a strawberry through a battleship.”
It’s a great quote, but it’s not the first time Martindale has referred to an upcoming opponent being able to sling strawberries at high velocities.
As Nick Shook wonderfully details, Martindale once mentioned Joe Flacco having the same remarkable, almost unheard of abilities. Shook goes on to point out Martindale likely picked up this descriptive device from when he worked with Rex Ryan for several years in various organizations.
What does being able to carve up ships with fruit have to do with being a great quarterback? Well, obviously Herbert has a strong arm and can throw with pinpoint accuracy. Herbert has garnered the attention of many throughout the league in his 20 NFL starts.
While Herbert likely has higher aspirations than being compared to Joe Flacco, he at least has a Super Bowl ring. 10-10 in his career so far, Herbert would likely gladly take that type of hardware to go along with his 2020 Rookie of the Year trophy.
For now, he hopes to lead his Chargers to 5-1 with a win over a red-hot Lamar Jackson-led Baltimore Ravens squad who is also hoping to move to 5-1.
