2023 RBC Canadian Open: TV schedule, predictions, tee times and more

The PGA Tour heads north of the U.S. border for the RBC Canadian Open at Oakdale County Club in Toronto.

Last week, Viktor Hovland won on the first playoff hole over Denny McCarthy, who bogeyed the 72nd hole, leading to the playoff at the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.

With the win, Hovland jumped up to No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking, leaping both Max Homa and Xander Schauffele.

With one week before the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, some players are skipping this week’s RBC Canadian Open to prepare for the third major tournament of the year.

Oakdale Country Club, who is hosting a professional event for the first time, is a par 72 course, measuring 7,264 yards.

With only four holes that will have water in play, players will have the opportunity to go after greens with 16 of the 18 holes being straight with two slight doglegs. However, the field is going to be challenged by the undulations around the course as tricky pin positions. Numerous false fronts will also make this week tough.

Tuesday’s news of the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour forming an alliance with LIV Golf might also challenge the field, especially mentally.

The outside noise and not knowing what will happen next in terms of financially or logistically could affect play this week. No players were told ahead of the announcement. It left players shocked all around the course, from the locker room, the driving range, the putting green or during a practice round either through an email sent out or on social media.

Who are some of the top golfers in the RBC Canadian Open field?

PGA: RBC Canadian Open - First Round
Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Not all of the top players are on hand for the RBC Canadian Open but there are some notable PGA Tour players competing this week.

Two top-10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are teeing it up in reigning FedEx Cup Champion, Rory McIlroy, ranked No. 3 and reigning U.S. Open and RBC Heritage Champion, Matt Fitzpatrick, ranked No. 8.

McIlroy has won this event the last two instances in 2019 and 2022. In 2019, the Northern Irishman scored a final round 61 to win by seven and recorded a final round 8-under 62 to win by two in the fast finish also by Tony Finau and Justin Thomas, who both shot a final round 6-under 64, to trail McIlroy.

The top Canadian in the field is Corey Conners, ranked No. 29 in the world. Conners is one three Canadians with a victory this season, alongside Adam Svensson and Mackenzie Hughes.

Making their PGA Tour debut this week is Ludvig Aberg, who became the first golfer to earn PGA Tour status by finishing No. 1 in the final 2023 PGA Tour University Rankings. Aberg, who had a decorated career at Texas Tech, earned membership for the remainder of the 2023 season as well as 2024.

In addition, receiving a sponsor exemption this week is Michael Block, who stole the show at the PGA Championship last month. Block, a PGA Professional from Southern California, recorded the only hole-in-one during the second major of the year and earned himself a spot in next year’s PGA Championship with a top-15 finish.

5 players who the best chance to win the RBC Canadian Open trophy on Sunday

Rory McIlroy

Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

When Rory McIlroy faces the media Wednesday morning, it will tell a lot as to his mentality this week with Tuesday’s news. McIlroy, who has been outspoken during the PGA/LIV discussion over the last couple of years, is probably going to be asked more on LIV Golf joining the PGA and the DP World Tours rather than trying to become the first person to successfully win the same tournament three consecutive times since Steve Stricker, who won the John Deere Classic from 2009-11.

The up-and-down season from McIlroy has slowly started to climb with a seven-place finish at the PGA Championship last month before missing the cut at the PLAYERS Championship and the Masters Tournament earlier this season and missing his second designated event. This season, McIlroy is top 10 in strokes gained: total, off the tee, approach the green and tee to green, while leading the PGA Tour in driving distance.

Sam Burns

Sam Burns, who won the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play event in March, comes to Canada with a sixth-place finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge a couple weeks ago. Despite missing the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship and the PGA Championship, Burns has five top-10s this season.

In his first RBC Canadian Open start last year, Burns shot all four rounds in the 60s, highlighted by back-to-back 65s in the final two rounds to finish tied for fourth. He also led the field in greens in regulation last year.

Corey Conners

PGA: RBC Canadian Open - First Round
Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

Corey Conners enters this week looking to be the first Canadian to win the RBC Canadian Open since Pat Fletcher in 1954 and the first Canadian-born player since Karl Keffer in 1914. Conners already has a victory a week before a major tournament this year, which came at the Valero Texas Open, a week before the Masters.

Including his victory, Conners has two top 10s and nine top 25s this season, highlighted by a eighth-place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship and a 12th-place finish at the PGA Championship that was limited by a final round 3-over 75.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Matt Fitzpatrick comes to Canada this week a week before he defends his U.S. Open title next week. Despite missing the cut at the PGA Championship, Fitzpatrick turned things around with a top 10 finish at the Memorial Tournament last week and could have been in contention if not for an opening round 4-over 76.

Fitzpatrick is within the top 20 in strokes gained: total, and around the green, making him within striking distance to stay hot heading into next week’s U.S. Open.

Justin Rose

The veteran Justin Rose has the opportunity to win his second tournament this season after claiming the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February with all four rounds in the 60s. That is going to key for the 42-year-old, who has a couple of top-15 finishes at the PGA Championship and the Charles Schwab Challenge in his last two starts.

Last year was Rose’s first appearance in the Great White North since the 2006 Canadian Open. The highlight for Rose was recording the low round for the tournament: a final round 10-under 60 to finish inside the top 5. That momentum from 12 months ago will be key this week.
