Former Notre Dame starting quarterback Tyler Buchner has made his decision on the transfer portal with the 2023 college football season roughly four months away.

The former four-star recruit from Southern California announced on social media Thursday that he is headed to play for Nick Saban with the Alabama Crimson Tide.

This has pretty much been a foregone conclusion since Notre Dame brought in former Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman in the transfer portal. It was clear that head coach Marcus Freeman and Co. were looking in another direction under center.

As for Buchner and his fit with the Crimson Tide, it’s highly likely that he’ll be QB1 once Alabama opens its season September 2 against Middle Tennessee.

Alabama’s starter for the past two seasons, Bryce Young, will soon hear his name called No. 1 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. There is a gaping hole at quarterback in Tuscaloosa.

Buchner follows former Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to Alabama. It should be a seamless transition for the two.

As for potential competition heading into the 2023 college football season, Jalen Milroe is currently listed as Alabama’s starter. He was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2021. The Texas native has thrown 60 passes in two seasons with the Tide.

  • Tyler Buchner stats (Notre Dame): 57% completion, 949 passing yards, 459 rushing yards, 13 total TD, 8 INT

Buchner missed all but three games last season for the Irish with a shoulder injury. He started the campaign as their QB1.

Joining Buchner and Milroe at the top of the Alabama depth chart are Ty Simpson and Eli Holstein. Simpson was the No. 22 overall recruit and the No. 3 quarterback in the Class of 2022. As for Holstein, he was a four-star recruit out of Louisiana this year.
