San Francisco 49ers’ Deebo Samuel hangs up on interview when pressed about the Eagles

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel talked a good game after his team was blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles in January’s NFC Championship Game.

Immediately after falling to the Eagles by the score of 31-7, the All-Pro weapon indicated that San Francisco would have won the playoff game if quarterback Brock Purdy was healthy throughout.

As you likely already know, Purdy suffered an elbow injury on San Francisco’s first drive. He was replaced under center by journeyman Josh Johnson. In fact, running back Christian McCaffrey ended up taking some snaps under center before Purdy — who could not throw a football — returned.

Regardless, the 49ers lost by three scores against an Eagles team that went tit-for-tat with Patrick Mahomes and the eventual champion Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Deebo Samuel appeared with Zach Gelb of CBS Sports Radio Monday evening. Things turned confrontational when the host continued to ask Samuel about his previous conversations.

“I saw what you said about the Eagles back at the Super Bowl,” Gelb said, “where if Brock Purdy didn’t get hurt, you guys would’ve won the game by double-digits. Why would that have been the case?”

“I mean, I said what I said,” Samuel replied.

Samuel was then pressed about San Francisco’s Week 13 outing against Philadelphia this coming season. That’s about when the star receiver hung up, pretty much to the shock of the host.

What’s the old saying? “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” Deebo joined other 49ers players in calling out the Eagles following January’s loss. He even went as far as to call Eagles cornerback James Bradberry trash.

Deebo Samuel stats (2022): 56 receptions, 632 yards, 232 rushing yards, 5 TD

It’s clear that the 49ers are frustrated about how things transpired in Philadelphia during the NFC Championship Game. They had won 12 consecutive games heading in. Purdy was playing at an historic level for a rookie. Who knows what would have happened if he was healthy throughout?

Even then, it’s not a great look to hang up on an interview because you are simply being asked about previous comments you made.
