Report: ‘Mounting buzz’ Browns will sign Robert Griffin III

Former Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III visited with the Cleveland Browns over the weekend, at which point it was reported that the Browns were continuing to do their homework on the embattled former first-round pick.

It was then reported earlier on Monday that the Browns were indeed moving on from trade discussions surrounding San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Instead, their focus had turned to RGIII.

Now comes this from CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora indicating that there is “mounting buzz” RGIII will end up signing with Cleveland:

Of course, all of this could be smoke thrown the media’s way from the Browns organization. Cleveland had previously been reportedly close to acquiring Kaepernick with the only things holding up a potential trade being the quarterback’s unwillingness to rework his contract and his weariness surrounding the team’s off-season moves.

If Kaepernick starts to see his options dwindling, his hard-line stance might end up being something of the past.

Though, the interest Cleveland possesses in RGIII could very well be genuine. The team released Johnny Manziel earlier this week and only has Josh McCown on the roster with previous starting experience.

The need to add another arm to compete with McCown and/or a rookie quarterback is there.
