New Orleans Saints reportedly add to defense by signing former No. 2 pick in NFL free agency

The New Orleans Saints have not necessarily been active in NFL free agency over the first week. Such is the nature of the beast when you are not in a great cap situation.

Even then, general manager Mickey Loomis was able to add a potential starter on the defensive side of the ball on Monday.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Saints have signed former Washington Commanders No. 2 pick Chase Young. The details of said deal are not yet known.

Young, 24, split time between the Commanders and San Francisco 49ers a season ago. He recorded 15 QB hits and 7.5 sacks in 16 games.

The former No. 2 pick out of Ohio State has not lived up to expectations since entering the league back in 2020. After winning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2020, he fell off the fence. That included recording a combined 1.5 sacks in 2021 and 2022 while dealing with a torn ACL.

The Saints needed to find depth out on the edge behind Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson. They were able to do that by adding Young on what will likely be a team-friendly short-term contract.
