John Dodson pulled out of his July 30 bantamweight bout against Cody Gibson after he and his family were involved in a serious car accident, manager Ricky Kottenstette said Saturday.

Kottenstette said Dodson, who lives in Albuquerque, N.M., and his family were beginning their vacation when the accident occurred on Friday night.

“The Dodsons were headed to Texas on vacation to visit family when they were involved in a near death accident with the whole family inside the vehicle,” Kottenstette said on a GoFundMe page set up to help the Dodsons. “They were all released from the hospital this morning but will have a rough month of recovery and financial hardship ahead.

“They have totaled their family vehicle and unfortunately John will no longer be able to fight in his upcoming July 30th bout.”

The fight against Gibson in Greenville, S.C., was slated to be Dodson’s XMMA debut after he parted ways with UFC last year.

The 36-year-old Dodson has a 21-12 career record with 10 knockouts. He lost six of his final 10 UFC bouts.
