With the Dallas Cowboys and star quarterback Dak Prescott seemingly at a contract negotiation stalemate, one NFL executive made a wild suggestion for why the team is not jumping at the chance to re-up with the three-time Pro Bowler.

Since the Cowboys have been very quiet in the free agent and trade markets this offseason, the Dak Prescott contract situation has grabbed many of the headlines when it comes to the team. And the reason why is because owner and general manager Jerry Jones likes to make big and bold proclamations about his team.

When the Cowboys were riding high and steamrolled their way into an NFC East title to end the season Jones made it seem like a contract extension for the player that will become a free agent after the 2024 NFL season was but a formality.

However, in recent weeks the momentum behind a new long-term pact has seemingly slowed down as talks have stopped and Jones appears very willing to let the 30-year-old play out the final year of his contract and possibly test his value on the open market a year from now. It was a confusing about-face after previous comments made by the Dallas boss they may be related to Prescott’s rumored asking price.

In a new report from Mike Sando of The Athletic on Wednesday, the NFL insider spoke to various league executives about the moves teams have made this offseason and one decision maker offered up a wild hypothesis on possible strategy the Dallas Cowboys may use to bring down the QBs asking price down.

“If the guy wants $60 million a year, you know what we are going to do instead?” the exec suggested from the point of view of the Cowboys. “We are going to have an average team, and you are going to play worse and we are going to get you at a better price.”

It’s a bold suggestion that probably isn’t likely but at this point, it’s anybody’s guess on why the Cowboys have cooled on on a new Dak Prescott contract and might run the risk of losing a talented QB, playoff warts and all.
