No Dak Prescott contract talks with the Dallas Cowboys ahead of NFL free agency

Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott is set to enter the final season of his current contract. It has led to widespread speculation that an extension will get done between the two sides here soon.

With a week to go before NFL free agency officially opens, it appears that nothing is going to happen on this front any time soon.

NFL Media’s Jane Slater reported on Wednesday that there has been no extension talks between the reigning NFL MVP runner-up and the Cowboys’ organization since the end of the 2023 season.

This is somewhat surprising in that Prescott was singing a different tune earlier in the week.

“I’m definitely confident, obviously it helps the team and it’s important for the numbers. I’ve heard Jerry say that. This is a process, both sides understand that. Everything is great. It will happen,” Prescott said.

Prescott is set to count a league-high $59.4 million against the 2024 NFL salary cap. The Cowboys currently find themselves $4 million over said cap with less than a week to go before the legal free agent tampering period.

Slater suggests that a contract extension could get done later into the summer this coming August. But that’s not going to help the Cowboys’ cap situation heading into free agency.

  • Dak Prescott stats (2023): 69.5% completion, 4,516 yards, 36 TD, 9 INT

There is a chance that Prescott and the Cowboys could come to terms on a restructured contract to push the issue down the road further. This would enable Dallas to go “all-in” during the offseason, as owner Jerry Jones suggests will be the case.

Either way, the lack of contract talks between these two sides still has to be seen as alarming. Dallas has to worry about extending both CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons. Meanwhile, Pro Bowlers Tyron Smith and Stephon Gilmore are slated to hit free agency.

There is a lot of work to do in Big D right now. It should start with the Prescott contract situation.
