Baltimore Orioles call up top prospect Colton Cowser to make MLB debut Wednesday

Outfielder Colton Cowser will join another top Baltimore Orioles prospect in the starting lineup Wednesday against the New York Yankees.

Baltimore announced earlier in the day that the former top-five pick from Sam Houston State has gotten the call from Triple-A Norfolk. He’s slated to bat seventh in the lineup, one spot ahead of fellow top prospect Jordan Westburg who got the call a couple weeks back.

According to MLB.com, Cowser is the Baltimore Orioles’ second-ranked prospect behind Jackson Holliday. He’s also considered the 66th-best prospect in all of baseball.

Colton Cowser stats (Triple-A): .330 average, 10 HR, 40 RBI, .996 OPS

As you can see the 23-year-old outfielder has been dominating minor league pitching thus far this season. A first-round pick back in 2021, Cowser boasts a career .257 average in the minors. Needless to say, he’s taken his game to new heights in 2023.

All of this comes with Baltimore mired in some major struggles heading into Wednesday’s game against the Yankees. Despite boasting a solid 49-35 record, Baltimore has lost six of its past seven games.

The idea of promoting Colton Cowser to make his MLB debut is to provide more juice to a lineup that has been limited to 10 runs over the past five games.

The Orioles remain firmly in the American League Playoff race as the first wild card team. They are also in second place in the AL East, six games behind the American League-best Tampa Bay Rays.
