San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy entered Week 16 as the strong favorite to win NFL MVP. With the 49ers’ offense looking unstoppable, a $2,000 bet in July on Purdy to win MVP was on the verge of a massive payout. Now it could be a story of regret.

While there remained some debate over the MVP race entering Week 16, Purdy was in the driver’s seat to win the award. With San Francisco heavily favored to earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC and the offense performing like the best in the NFL, Purdy seemed destined for MVP.

  • Brock Purdy stats (Weeks 1-5, 9-15): 131.2 BQ rating, 26-2 TD-INT, 3,033 passing yards, 72% completion rate, 10.3 yards per attempt, 275.7 passing yards per game

The bettor who placed the $2,000 wager on Purdy to take home NFL MVP decided to take advantage of the money he already made. As noted by Darren Rovell, the ticket was sold on Prop Swap for $125,000. A few days later, the Baltimore Ravens defense changed everything.

A four-interception performance in a blowout loss to Baltimore sent Purdy’s MVP odds into a freefall. Even worse, the performance created a four-game sample that pales in comparison to Purdy’s success in his best performances.

  • Brock Purdy stats (Weeks 6-8, 16): 65.2 QB rating, 3-9 TD-INT, 1,017 passing yards, 60.8% completion rate, 8.5 yards per attempt, 254.3 passing yards per game

Purdy’s MVP odds have since plummeted to +100 behind Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (-2000), 49ers’ running back Christian McCaffrey (+250), Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (+800) and his odds are now tied with Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (+1000).

While the 49ers will close out the season against the Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams, potential wins that would result in a 13-4 record, the new narrative is written. Purdy is extremely unlikely to win MVP and the person who hoped their $125,000 investment would turn into $202,000 has now lost it all.
