Victor Wembanyama’s debut jersey fetches huge haul at auction

San Antonio Spurs first-round pick Victor Wembanyama is pretty much the biggest rookie to make his NBA debut (figuratively and literally) since a guy by the name of LeBron James all the way back in 2003.

The 7-foot-4 French sensation has taken the Association by storm, already putting up some stellar performances just 14 games into his rookie campaign.

Just how popular is Wemby? The Jersey he wore for his regular-season debut against the Dallas Mavericks back on Oct. 25 just sold for $762,000 on the Sotheby’s auction block. Per TMZ Sports, it had projected for sell for much less at a cool $100,000. Imagine paying $762K for a game-worn jersey representing a player just 14 games into his NBA career. Talk about an investment. A risky investment.

But Wemby could very well end up being worth it. The big man is seen as a generational talent and has already proven it to an extent with a 38-point performance against the Phoenix Suns back on Nov. 2. Thus far this season, he’s looked every bit the part of a superstar.

Sure, Wembanyama has had his inconsistencies. His 27% mark from three-point range and average of 3.6 turnovers per game are two primary examples of this. But at 19, he’s also proven to be well advanced at his young age.

In his last outing, Wembanyama went for a mere nine points on 4-of-12 shooting in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. He’ll look to rebound Wednesday against the very same Clippers. At least one fan will be cheering him on for multiple reasons.
