Russell Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers eyeing long-term contract after signing

Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson is set to play under a one-year, $1.21 million contract after he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It makes sense given that Wilson’s former Denver Broncos team is still paying him $39 million this year after releasing the 35-year-old veteran.

Does this mean Wilson won’t be long in Pittsburgh? After all, the Steelers acquired young quarterback Justin Fields in a trade with the Chicago Bears over the weekend.

Not so fast.

According to Steelers insider Gerry Dulac, the plan is to sign Wilson to a long-term contract at the end of the 2024 NFL season. He is not simply going to be a stopgap option.

Pittsburgh is in a grat position at the quarterback spot. At least, when we talk about the finances. Wilson and Fields are set to count a combined $4.4 million against the cap in 2024. It’s one of the cheapest quarterback rooms in the NFL.

It should also set the Steelers up well to be players in both free agency and on the trade block moving forward on the season. They are already set to meet with former Los Angeles Chargers star wide receiver Mike Williams later this week.
