According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the New Orleans Saints have reportedly released running back Pierre Thomas.
Thomas made the Saints squad as an undrafted free agent in 2007. In eight seasons with the Saints, Thomas racked up 3,745 rushing yards, 2,608 receiving yards and 48 touchdowns.
Unfortunately for Thomas, the Saints are in dire straits when it comes to their 2015 salary cap, which currently sits at a $21.9 million deficit.
Thomas signed a two-year, $4 million contract with New Orleans last March. He then proceeded to put up 600 yards in an injury plagued 2014 campaign. This move saves the Saints $2.565 million against the cap.
Thomas now joins an ever-increasing pool of talented free agents set to hit the open market on March 10th—a market that may not value his overall production.
