Orlando Magic waive popular son of former NBA star

Year after year, we’ve seen the Orlando Magic continue to collect young talent. The Magic have made five lottery selections, just in the past three drafts, including last year’s Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero with the No. 1 pick.

But there are only so many roster spots available. Eventually, something has to give. We may be seeing evidence of that cold hard fact with the team’s latest player transaction.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Magic have released Bol Bol after being unable to find a worthy trade offer. Yahoo’s Jake Fischer adds that Orlando’s front office had trade discussions with Dallas and Phoenix leading up to the NBA draft, but nothing came to fruition. It’s possible we see either team get back involved now that Bol is a free agent.

Bol, son of the late great Manute Bol, who played ten NBA seasons, is still just 23 years old. And like his dad, his 7-foot-2 length creates a lot of mismatches on both ends of the floor.

After developing for three years with the Denver Nuggets but receiving very little play time, Bol seemingly finally find a role in Orlando in his fourth season, averaging 21.5 minutes per game.

Despite being set to earn $2.2 million this season, the Magic felt allowing Bol to find a new team was the best move for everyone involved. Even if the Magic have other plans in their future, it shouldn’t take long for Bol to get another opportunity elsewhere.
