An NFL player lost $8 million by gambling in 2022 alone

No NFL players may bet on football games, but they can all bet on other sporting events, as long as it’s not done from a team facility. This rule has confused many players and coaches, leading some to push the boundaries, getting in trouble with a suspension.

Calvin Ridley learned this the hard way, getting suspended for the entire 2022 season in a shocking turn of events. But little did we know, he was far from the last person associated with the NFL to face penalties for gambling.

In April, five players were suspended, including Jameson Williams and three other members of the Detroit Lions. Shortly after, Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers drew criticism for allegedly making “100 bets” on various sporting events that also reportedly included NFL games.

While we’ve yet to learn the repercussions of Rodgers’ actions, some have wondered if the NFL will pursue banishing the Colts cornerback from the league altogether, sending a strong message about their gambling policy.

Now according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, an unknown NFL player suffered $8 million in losses by gambling just in the year 2022 alone. There is no indication of who the player is, what position he plays or which team he’s on. We also don’t know if this figure refers to a player who made legal, or by the NFL’s eyes, ‘illegal’ bets.

Still, it just shows the volatility of gambling. As the old rule of thumb goes, if you can’t afford to spare the dough, you shouldn’t be playing with it. Chances are, since this player is in the NFL, making at least six figures, he can probably overcome an $8 million loss. Everyone else? Probably not so lucky. If you choose to bet, do so with extreme caution.
