New York Yankees lose top bullpen arm for season after mysterious domestic violence suspension

The New York Yankees lost one of their best relievers this season on Wednesday after he was suspended for the rest of the season following a major violation of the league’s domestic violence policy.

The New York Yankees have had a frustrating 2023 campaign. They have dealt with injuries to quite a few of their top players — including an ongoing toe injury for superstar Aaron Judge — and certain players are not performing at the level they did in 2022. They also have the bad luck of being in the best division in MLB this season, which features two of the top team’s in the league currently.

However, one area where the Yankees have received consistent production is from their bullpen. The seven players that have made the most appearances for their staff this year come from the pen and they all have posted ERA’s below 4.00, including four with sub-3.00 ERAs. One of those players that have delivered in a big way is newcomer Jimmy Cordero.

The 31-year-old has appeared in 31 games, owns a 3-2 record with a 3.86 ERA and 34 strikeouts, and 10 walks in just over 32 innings. He is a key member of a bullpen that has been one of the best in MLB this season, and the team will be without him for the rest of their 2023 campaign.

On Wednesday, MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred announced that “following an investigation, New York Yankees pitcher Jimmy Cordero has accepted a suspension for the remainder of the 2023 Championship Season and Postseason for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.”

As part of the terms of his suspension, Cordero is expected to be evaluated and receive treatment from the program supervised by the Joint Policy Board. This is the first news regarding an investigation into the Dominican pitcher, and what makes it all the more worrisome is MLB is being tight-lipped about the specifics of the investigation.

This is not the first instance of a Yankees pitcher having ugly links to domestic violence in recent years. Starter Domingo Germain was accused of domestic violence in 2019, and former closer Aroldis Chapman was allegedly involved in a domestic violence incident in 2016.
