Heading into the New York Mets game today, the club sits at the bottom of the MLB standings thanks to a variety of issues with both their lineup and pitching. While expectations weren’t especially high for New York in 2024, it seems roster upgrades are already being explored.

Entering MLB games today, the Mets’ lineup ranks 29th in runs scored (eight) and on-base percentage (.250) while placing 28th in batting average (.188) and slugging (.301). During the course of this four-game losing streak, fans at Citi Field have rightfully been critical of the on-field product.

A season after having the highest payroll in MLB history with expectations of competing for a World Series, the roster is worse than it was a year ago. However, many of the team’s star hitters remain but the lineup has been overhauled due to trades, free agency and injuries.

With starting pitchers Kodai Senga (shoulder) and Tylor Megill (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list, New York is in desperate need of pitching depth. After not seriously pursuing Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell or Michael Lorenzen, it appears the front office does now have a target in MLB free agency.

According to SNY’s Andy Martino, the Mers are “open to external options” to bolster their starting rotation and that approach has led to renewed contract talks with Julio Teheran.

Teheran, age 33, was reportedly choosing between the Mets and Baltimore Orioles this offseason. He chose Baltimore and pitched with them in spring training then opted out of his contract after not making the Opening Day roster.

The veteran right-handed pitcher appeared in 14 games for the Milwaukee Brewers last season, making 11 starters. While he held opponents to a 4.5 percent walk rate, Teheran also allowed a .251 batting average with a 1.15 WHIP. However, with limited options to choose from, Teheran might be the Mets’ top choice to finally provide some much-needed pitching depth immediately.
