Los Angeles Chargers superstar Justin Herbert reportedly suffered ‘gruesome’ hand injury in Week 4

While the Los Angeles Chargers earned a second straight win in NFL Week 4, their most important player reportedly incurred a “gruesome” hand injury that could be problematic in the weeks ahead.

Despite a late rally that cut their lead down to seven points in the fourth quarter, the Los Angeles Chargers were able to hold on for a 24-17 win against division rivals the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. However, during the victory that moved their record to 2-2, Justin Herbert suffered a serious injury to his left hand.

While trying to make a tackle on Tre’von Moehrig after a third-quarter interception, the 25-year-old actually fractured one of his fingers. Fortunately for him and the Chargers, the finger is on his non-throwing hand. On Monday morning, NFL Media league insider Ian Rapoport gave some more details on what was reportedly a “gruesome” injury for the star quarterback.

“Chargers QB Justin Herbert suffered a fractured finger on his left, non-throwing hand, sources say. The finger also suffered a gruesome nail injury,” Rapoport wrote on X/Twitter. “Herbert somehow finished the game and with the bye, should not miss time.”

Herbert could be seen wearing a glove on his left hand for the last quarter of the game after being evaluated by medical staff on the sideline. The good news is that the injury should not have a major effect on his throwing and with the team off this weekend, he will have a couple of weeks to heal up before their game against the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 16.

Nevertheless, it will still be something to monitor since this sort of injury usually takes six to eight weeks to recover from. It could become problematic during snaps when he returns to action in Week 6 or if he takes a direct hit on it at some point. It will also limit him when trying to keep both hands firmly on the ball when taking pressure and trying to move around in the pocket.
