Last Judgment took the Pimlico Special field gate to wire, winning the Grade 3, $250,000 stakes race in an upset on Friday at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course.

The 5-year-old gelding trained by Mike Maker and ridden by Jose Ortiz was a recent bargain buy, having been claimed by Maker for $62,500 last October.

Ortiz guided Last Judgment from the outside, No. 11, post and the pair led through an opening quarter in :23.83, a half in :47.60 and held off a mild challenge to finish the mile and 3/16 test in 1:54.37.

The victory, by a length and a half, returned $11.80, $6 and $3.80. Modernist was second and even-money favorite Fearless was third.

The Pimlico Special gives the improving Last Judgment four wins over his past six starts, with the two losses coming at Gulfstream Park in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup (eighth) and the Grade 3 Ghostzapper Stakes.

Last Judgment is owned by Michael Dubb, Steve Hornstock, Bethlehem Stables LLC and Nice Guys Stables. He was bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds.
