Indianapolis Colts discussing new contract with Jonathan Taylor

In 2021, Jonathan Taylor broke out in an enormous way, racking up 1,811 rushing yards, leading the NFL in rush yards, touchdowns, and yards from scrimmage. The following season saw Taylor record less than half of his production from the season prior, finishing with just 861 yards and four touchdowns in 11 games as opposed to 17.

The issue was Taylor suffered an ankle injury during the season, causing him to miss six weeks of action. But his yards per carry also took a dip, down from 5.5 yards per carry to 4.5 YPC in 2022. Yet, not all the blame could be placed on Taylor, or his injuries, as the Indianapolis Colts’ offensive line also had a down season.

Now, Taylor heads into the final year of his rookie contract. The All-Pro running back previously noted he’d be willing to play out his contract without signing an extension first, but the Colts may have other plans.

Taylor offered some additional insight into his contract situation on Wednesday, revealing his agency is working with the team’s front office toward reaching an extension before the season kicks off.

At this point, Taylor is hopeful an extension will get done before the regular season, but he’s also very aware of the current running back market and how teams are less willing to dole out large guarantees at the position. Ultimately, Taylor said, “Hopefully they can see the value.

For now, Taylor is set to play the 2023 season out, earning a base salary of $4.3 million. This is by far the largest amount the fourth-year pro has earned in his NFL career to date. Chances are, his next contract with come in much, much higher.
