Houston Texans could ‘take swing’ on signing top free agent

After their moves from last year’s offseason paid off in a big way, the Houston Texans are in an enviable position ahead of the new league year. Not only do they now have the right head coach in DeMeco Ryans, plus their franchise quarterback in C.J. Stroud, but the Texans also boast some of the most cap space in the NFL, with over $60 million to spend.

While the Texans were able to shock the world by going from the second-worst team in football in 2022 to one that won their division and a playoff game in 2023, now there’s a sense of urgency to do more. With free agency right around the corner, we’re about to see just how aggressive the Texans’ front office is willing to be, but some insiders think a big move is coming.

Houston Texans could target Christian Wilkins in free agency

One way the Houston Texans’ defense could take another big step forward is by solidifying their defensive line, and there’s no better player available than Christian Wilkins. The 28-year-old former first-round pick enjoyed a breakout season last year, recording nine sacks, 23 QB hits, and ten tackles for loss. But now Wilkins finds himself ranked as the best interior defender available in free agency after Chris Jones landed a record-breaking contract in Kansas City.

Wilkins is available, and the Dolphins have one of the worst salary cap situations in the league, and are sitting roughly $18 million over the 2024 spending limit. This may be why they avoided placing the franchise tag on Wilkins, and it could make reaching a long-term extension difficult too.

However, Miami’s potential loss could be Houston’s gain.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Texans could “swing” for Wilkins this offseason. But it’s not just Houston who is interested in the 6-foot-4, 314-pound defender. Fowler also notes Minnesota’s connection, with defensive coordinator Brian Flores having coached Wilkins for three seasons, and the Vikings are making him a priority.

Fowler also suggested the Browns could be ready to chase after Wilkins, where he’d join a fearful defensive front that also features Myles Garrett. Either way, there’s no shortage of interest in the game-wrecking DT.
