2023 Farmers Insurance Open: television schedule, predictions, tee times and more

PGA: Farmers Insurance Open - First Round

The next stop of the PGA Tour’s West Coast swing continues to San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, a course that has been used for previous U.S. Opens. That includes back in 2021 and in 2008, the latter of which Tiger Woods made a birdie putt to force a playoff for his eventual major victory.

Last week, Jon Rahm, who won the 2021 U.S. Open, was back in the winner’s circle in a one-shot victory over rookie Davis Thompson at The American Express in La Quinta.

Although the red-hot Rahm won with a score of 27-under par last week, no scores are projected to reach that point at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Players will be playing on both courses – North and South – over the first two days with the third and fourth rounds taking place on the South Course.

The North Course is easier than the South Course, but both courses provide challenges as players really have to focus on landing balls on the fairway in order to aim for low scores.

One thing to note is that this is the only PGA Tour event on the schedule where first round action begins on Wednesday and cut day will be after Thursday’s second round for the second straight year.

What channel is the Farmers Insurance Open on?

The Farmers Insurance Open will be televised between CBS and the Golf Channel. In order to avoid conflict with the NFL’s Conference Championship games, the Farmers Insurance Open will start first round action on Wednesday and conclude on Saturday.

Friday will mark the debut for the 2008 Masters Champion, Trevor Immelman, as CBS Sports’ lead golf analyst in the booth alongside Jim Nantz following the retirement of Nick Faldo.

Payout for the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open

The total purse for the event is set for $8.7 million and the winner will receive $1.6 million.

Who are some of the top golfers in the Farmers Insurance Open?

In addition to Rahm, who jumped up to No. 3 in the Official World Golf Ranking, five of the top 10 players in the world are at Torrey Pines this week. That includes World No. 8 and 9 Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas, both of whom are playing for the first time since the Sentry Tournament of Champions at the beginning of the month.

Morikawa, who became the latest to join the Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy-led high-tech golf league, TGL, on Monday with Adam Scott, is looking to get off to a good start like he did in Hawaii and finish stronger.

In addition, after firing a final round 10-under 62 last week, World No. 6 Xander Schauffele makes a return to his hometown at Torrey Pines.

Last year’s winner, Luke List, and runner-up, Will Zalatoris are both in the field. Zalatoris, ranked No. 7 in the world, had an 8-foot birdie putt for the win 12 months ago, but the putt veered to the left.

5 players who can hoist the Farmers Insurance Open trophy on Saturday

Collin Morikawa

Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Collin Morikawa is playing for the first time since his collapse at the Sentry Tournament of Champions a few weeks ago. Last time Morikawa played at Torrey Pines was the 2021 U.S. Open – as the reigning champion – and tied for seventh.

His only past Farmers Insurance Open appearance was in 2020 when he finished 21st overall by finishing with a score of 6-under 282 that was limited by a 2-over 74 in the third round.

Being able to go against the best elevates one’s play and after playing the Sentry Tournament of Champions, this week will motivate Morikawa even more.

Xander Schauffele

Despite having the back injury, Xander Schauffele’s performance last week showed how well he was not only able to rebound, but contend.

Although the San Diego State alum missed the cut in four of his first five starts at the Farmers Insurance Open, he placed second in 2021 and seventh during the U.S. Open a few months later.

With the way Schauffele played last week, he has the opportunity to be at or near the top this week.

Tony Finau

Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Tony Finau enters this week after posting a score of -21 at The American Express a few days ago. Now making the two-hour trip from PGA West to Torrey Pines, Finau is looking to take that momentum to the Farmers Insurance Open.

Finau, who ranks No. 10 in the FedEx Cup standings, has finished inside the top-6 in four of the last six Farmers Insurance Opens, highlighted by his second-place finish with Schauffele in 2021.

Two years ago, Finau was on track to win, but was hurt by a 2-over 74 in the third round to end his chances of winning.

Will Zalatoris

This is one of the many tournaments from last season that Will Zalatoris wants back.

The vengeance to get into the winner’s circle after coming up a couple of inches short of the win last year showed the ability to be at the top as he would eventually do all season long before his first PGA Tour win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August.

In three appearances at the Farmers Insurance Open, Zalatoris missed the cut in 2018 and finished seventh in 2021 before last year.

Jon Rahm

Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

It is becoming a no-brainer as Rahm has now won four times in last six starts worldwide, including last week’s American Express victory.

In addition to Rahm being the 2021 U.S. Open champ on this course, he also won this event in 2017. Rahm has played this event six times and has also finished second, third, fifth and seventh.

Rahm is looking to win his third straight start this week. Since 1997 there have 18 such instances of a player winning three consecutive starts. Tiger Woods has 14 of those three-event win streaks.
