Sacramento Kings could add 8-time All-Star in NBA free agency if they’re interested

One of the best centers of the previous decade wants to join the Sacramento Kings. The question is do the Pacific Division champions have any interest?

The Sacramento Kings enter the summer of 2023 at a high point they haven’t had in nearly 20 years. Sure, they lost in the first round of the playoffs. But their defeat came at the hands of the defending champions and the series went to seven games. While it was a disappointing result, there was still much to be proud of in their 2022-2023 campaign.

The organization finally has a coach to rally behind in NBA Coach of the Year award winner Mike Brown. They have a pair of budding stars in De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. And the trio was key in helping the franchise reach the postseason for the first time since 2006.

Now, all of a sudden Sacramento is becoming a destination for veterans hoping to hop onto a roster that can be a playoff contender for many years to come. And a perfect example of that shift in reputation came on Tuesday with a future Hall-of-Famer making it very clear he would love to be a member of the Sacramento Kings roster.

In a new interview with the Sacramento Observer, eight-time All-Star Dwight Howard told the outlet, “I’m not retired from the NBA just yet, and I would love to help the Sacramento Kings contend for a title. Even though I believe their team is pretty much set.”

Howard did not play in the NBA this season as many teams passed on signing the former Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers star. He has continued his playing career this year with Taiwan’s Taoyuan Leopards.

While the 37-year-old is a decade removed from his last All-Star appearance, he certainly wouldn’t be a bad option for the Sacramento Kings as a backup center, in a move to add more depth to the roster for next season.
