New York Giants provide limited Daniel Jones injury update as things continue to spiral

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a neck injury in Sunday’s blowout loss to the Miami Dolphins. This seemed pretty imminent given how much the struggling quarterback has been hit thus far during the 2023 season.

Jones did not return to action in the ugly 31-16 loss. He went to see a specialist earlier this week to figure out the extent of the injury.

As of right now, the Giants are not providing any updates on the medicals heading into their Week 6 road outing against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football.

“His neck is sore,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters. Daboll would not expand, only to indicate that Jones will not practice on Wednesday. This puts his availability for Week 6 up in the air as the 1-4 Giants look to salvage their season.

In addition to Jones’ struggles with turnovers (seven giveaways in five games), the high-priced quarterback has been sacked a resounding 28 times. He’s on pace to be the most-sacked quarterback in single-season NFL history. This, too, played a role in Jones’ neck injury Sunday in that it came during a sack.

If Jones is unable to go Sunday against the Bills, veteran Tyrod Taylor would get the start. He’s not necessarily a major downgrade in the truest sense of the term.

Even then, other injuries on the Giants’ roster could threaten to further derail their season.

Star left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) has missed each of the past four games. He was joined by tight end Darren Waller (groin), center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson (knee), edge rusher Azeez Ojulari (ankle) and offensive tackle Matt Peart (shoulder) in being sidelined from practice on Wednesday.

A fully healthy Giants team would have a hard time going into Western New York and coming away with a win over the superior Bills on national television. Add in these injuries, and the Giants’ disaster class of a season could very well go off the tracks even more in Week 6.

Since 1978, only seven teams that have started a season 1-4 have gone on to make the playoffs. Three teams since the NFL-AFL merger back in 1970 have started 1-5 and went on to make the postseason.

The Giants are facing a major uphill climb. And it looks like Daniel Jones won’t be the quarterback to help them out of it come Sunday night.
