The Dallas Cowboys moved off two of their backup quarterbacks during final cuts earlier this week, only to sign Will Grier after his release from the Carolina Panthers.
There’s certainly a ton of issues for Dallas behind Dak Prescott at quarterback. We saw that first-hand with major struggles being the name of the game during the preseason slate.
Heading into Week 1 against the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the matter of days, this is the biggest question mark in Big D.
However, there could be a resolution. It would come in the form of recently-released former NFL MVP Cam Newton. Here’s a look at three reasons why the Dallas Cowboys should sign him.
Cam Newton would provide Dallas Cowboys actual experience
Coming off a disastrous six-win campaign that saw Prescott miss all but five games due to a devastating ankle injury, the Cowboys are one bit of bad luck away from seeing their 2021 season derailed. Prescott also missed a vast majority of training camp and the entire preseason with a shoulder injury.

Contending teams must have experienced backup quarterbacks. Jerry Jones and Co. fancy themselves as actual contenders. With a decade of experience under his belt, Newton would provide that type of experience. It’s that simple.
Cam Newton is a fit in Dallas Cowboys’ system
No one will mistake Prescott for being among the most-mobile quarterbacks in the NFL. Heck, Aaron Rodgers wasn’t seen as incredibly mobile during his playing days under Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy with the Green Bay Packers.
Even then, we’re not talking about statues in the backfield. Both have shown an ability to scramble, adding new elements to the McCarthy-led offense. This would certainly come in handy, especially with the threats Dallas has at the skill positions. If Prescott were to get injured, Newton would provide that extra element. Imagine his running ability with Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard in the backfield.
Cam Newton would come cheap
At this stage in the year, Newton is likely looking at nothing more than a veteran minimum deal. He has very few options out there. That’s especially true with the free agent among those not vaccinated from COVID-19 (more on that in a second).
Dallas’ salary cap situation is not great. Even adding roughly $4 million to the mix by acquiring Nick Foles from the Chicago Bears would be an issue. This wouldn’t be a problem when it comes to adding Newton to the 53-man roster.

Of course, all of this could be moot. New England showed frustration with a unvaccinated Newton breaking COVID-19 protocols. While the team has said publicly that it didn’t play a role in his release, that’s hard to believe. Dallas will not want to put Prescott in jeopardy of missing action with an unvaccinated individual in the quarterback room with him. Meanwhile, Jerry Jones has been an outspoken vaccine advocate. Perhaps, Newton will make the decision to get his shots if it means joining America’s Team.
