The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired third baseman Eugenio Suarez from the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday in exchange for right-hander Carlos Vargas and catcher Seby Zavala.

The D-backs add a big bat to their infield and lineup to defend their National League Championship Series crown in 2024. Suarez, 32, hit 22 home runs this past season and has clubbed 30 or more HRs four times, including 49 in 2019. His addition likely spells the end of free agent Evan Longoria’s time in Arizona. Longoria is 38.

Vargas, 24, made his major league debut in 2023 and five appearances overall for the Diamondbacks. He posted a 5.79 ERA without a decision.

Zavala, 30, played in seven games for the D-backs after being claimed off waivers from the Chicago White Sox in early September. He hit .171 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs in 73 games with both clubs. He’s a career .210 hitter with 14 HRs in four seasons.

The Mariners also designated RHP Ryan Jensen for assignment to create space on the 40-man roster for Vargas and Zavala.

Suarez is a career .248 hitter with 246 HRs and 730 RBIs for three clubs. He earned an All-Star nod with Cincinnati in 2018. The Mariners shed $11 million owed to Suarez in 2024, the final season of a six-year, $66 million deal he signed with the Reds in 2018.

“I want to thank Geno for his contributions over the past two years, on and off the field. The day he walked in, he told us ‘good vibes only’ and he brought that mantra to our clubhouse and our fans, he’s truly one of kind and we’re lucky to have had him as part of our club,” Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said.
