Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey arrested on misdemeanor assault charge

Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey was arrested on Monday and charged with misdemeanor assault following an alleged incident with a woman he was dating.

According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the 22-year-old defensive tackle was arrested in Harris County, Texas after his girlfriend accused him of getting physical with her during an argument over “a dog and keys to a rental car.”

Prosecutors have alleged that during the argument, Winfrey grabbed the woman, causing bodily harm to her. Court documents noted that bystanders were required to intervene during the dispute and the woman reportedly told authorities shortly after that the 6-foot-4 defensive tackle has assaulted her previously.

Winfrey, a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, played in 13 games last season for Cleveland. Serving as a rotational defensive lineman, he played on 342 defensive snaps with Pro Football Focus grading him 185th among defensive tackles last season.

A former second-team All-Big 12 selection at Oklahoma, the 6-foot-4 defensive lineman previously played at Iowa Western Community College. He first attended junior college after being ruled academically ineligible to play at the NCAA Division I level coming out of high school.

In a statement to ESPN, the Browns said they are “aware of the situation and gathering more information.” During the 2022 season, Cleveland suspended Winfrey for an undisclosed disciplinary reason.

“It was pretty common knowledge and it was easy to see. It wasn’t like we had to bring it to his attention. It was just, his actions were very apparent.”
