Richie Palacios hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the 11th inning Saturday night and the visiting St. Louis Cardinals went on to a 5-2 victory over San Diego, ending the Padres’ eight-game winning streak.
The Padres fell to 0-12 this season in extra-inning games.
With Tommy Edman on second to open the 11th as the automatic runner, Padres reliever Scott Barlow (2-6) intentionally walked Paul Goldschmidt before Jordan Walker blooped a single to short right to load the bases.
Edman scored on Palacios’ fly to right. Luken Baker then singled home Goldschmidt. Following a double steal, Andrew Knizner brought home Walker with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Padres tied the game in the bottom of the ninth after Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley walked the bases loaded with no outs. Pinch runner Eguy Rosario scored the tying run on Xander Bogaerts’ grounder to third. Helsley then struck out Fernando Tatis Jr. and Juan Soto to force the game into the 10th.
Casey Lawrence (1-0) pitched two scoreless, hitless innings for the win as St. Louis ended a four-game skid.
Masyn Winn hit a two-run, two-out single in the seventh inning to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
Baker started the rally by drawing a one-out walk from Pedro Avila. Knizner followed with a double that put Cardinals at second and third. Avila then struck out Irving Lopez, who went 0-for-3 in his major league debut.
Winn, who hit a game-tying homer Friday night, lined an opposite-field single to right, easily scoring Baker with the tying run. Tatis’ throw to the plate beat Knizner, but Padres catcher Luis Campusano couldn’t hold onto the ball, allowing the go-ahead ruin to score.
In the San Diego first, Bogaerts drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch by Jake Woodford and scored on Manny Machado’s two-out single to left.
The Cardinals benefitted from several excellent plays. Campusano led off the bottom of the sixth with a drive to right that right fielder Jordan Walker leaped at the wall and batted the ball back onto the playing field with his glove, then threw out Campusano going into second.
Woodford allowed one run on four hits and two walks with a strikeout in 3 2/3 innings. Padres starter Nick Martinez blanked the Cardinals over the first four innings, giving up two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
