The Cincinnati Bengals nearly pulled off an overtime win over the Miami Dolphins Sunday, but many of their fans were rooting for the loss.
Of course, the big reason fans wanted the Bengals to lose is because a loss would clinch the No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. And after falling in overtime, that’s exactly what the Bengals did.
Still, Bengals players Andy Dalton and Tyler Boyd were not happy at all about that outlook. They both took time to rip them for not being “true fans.”
It’s easy to see why players would be upset that their own fans wanted them to lose.
But honestly, landing the No. 1 overall pick in a season that’s already been lost for weeks is the best consolation prize a franchise can get.
For Dalton, being a part of this clinching loss likely means the end of his tenure in Cincinnati. He’s a lame duck to begin with, as his contract has no guaranteed money in 2020. On top of that, the Bengals almost certainly will select LSU quarterback Joe Burrow atop the draft.
