Carson Wentz didn’t make it out of the first quarter of his first playoff game this past January. Taking a violent helmet-to-helmet hit from Jadeveon Clowney, he suffered a concussion and was ruled out the rest of the way. The Philadelphia Eagles ended up losing the game, and Wentz had to endure more talk about his injury history.
Carson Wentz finally opens up about ‘scary’ concussion
Four months after enduring the concussion, Wentz is ready to talk about the injury. He opened up about it with media on Monday, per Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philly:
“It’s scary stuff,” he said. “It kind of changes a lot of things in your brain, and you only get one of these brains and you’ve got to protect it. It was tough to see the finish of that game. That was the end of our season. It was frustrating not to be out there.”
Wentz uttered the word “frustrating” multiple times as he discussed the season-ending concussion. He elaborated on exactly why it was so hard to deal with.
“A head injury is something that’s just out of your control and it’s just the really frustrating part. I know the league is doing everything they can to take the head injuries out of it, but we as players know what we’re signing up for and we know there’s risks involved. For me I was just frustrated A) to have to deal with a concussion, because that’s never fun – I don’t wish that on anybody – but B) to not be able to finish that game with my teammates and not give us the best chance to win and to do everything I could.”
The young gunslinger has suffered injuries in each of the last three seasons. Perhaps as a result, the Eagles surprised everyone selecting Jalen Hurts with the 53rd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
As for Wentz, he’s still the undisputed starter on Philly’s roster. And he’s been extremely classy in his response to the team’s stunning move to find his potential replacement. If he once more succumbs to injury in 2020, the Eagles will have a young star in the making ready to take his place.
In the meantime, Wentz and his wife are simply enamored with their first child — born just last week.
