The latest surreal drama surrounding Major League Baseball during what has been a drama-filled offseason for the sport includes both the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox firing their managers.
Houston moved on from A.J. Hinch earlier in the week after the team was handed a stiff punishment stemming from it stealing signs during the 2017 season.
Then, late Tuesday night, the 2018 champion Red Sox moved on from manager Alex Cora. He was implicated in MLB’s investigation regarding that team also stealing signs.
For some, this means that the Los Angeles Dodgers — losers in the World Series to the Astros in 2017 and Red Sox in 2018 — should be awarded the titles for those two seasons.
The Los Angeles City Council is now slated to vote on a resolution demanding that Major League Baseball take said action. No joke.
“Councilman Gil Cedillo, one of the sponsors of the resolution, said he expects the council to approve it,” Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reported. “As of late Wednesday, the city clerk had not yet determined what day the resolution would come up for a vote,” Cedillo, whose district includes Dodger Stadium, said neither the Dodgers nor his constituents had requested the resolution.”
That’s certainly going to move the needle here. MLB would have already come to this resolution in handing out the punishments to Houston.
Though, there’s some merit to this. Both Hinch and former Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow were suspended a calendar year. The team was stripped of four draft picks and fined $5 million.
If you’re going to go to that length, why not strip both teams of their championships?
