While New York Mets rookie Pete Alonso won $1 million on Monday with his victory in the Home Run Derby, he doesn’t seem too overwhelmed by the payout.
Despite the fact that the $1 million prize will nearly double his 2019 salary, Alonso seemed far more proud of the accomplishment than the payoff that came with it.
That’s true. Alonso will be a Home Run Derby champion long after the $1 million is gone.
Additionally, while he’s currently under team control in his rookie salary, Alonso will make significantly more than that $1 million as soon as he gets into arbitration and then free agency.
For now, though, while he may take more pride in being the 2019 Home Run Derby champion, the $1 million prize sure is a nice bonus.
