Geno Smith apologizes for postgame comments, vows to be better

Geno Smith

Following Sunday’s loss to the Oakland Raiders, New York Giants quarterback Geno Smith fired back at comments that his former coach, Rex Ryan, had made before the game. Given some time to think about everything, Smith offered an apology for his comments.

Ultimately, the apology is a nice gesture on Smith’s part. But in truth, it shouldn’t be needed.

Smith has been in the middle of a controversy for a solid week for something that he really had nothing to do with. The true controversy was around coach Ben McAdoo and Eli Manning. The only thing that Smith did to be a part of that was sign to be New York’s backup. Still, his game has taken its share of shots in response to the controversy. While professional athletes have to get used to that, it also has to get old quickly.

Seeing someone you thought as a friend piling on can’t be a lot of fun. It’s only natural to lash out when it happens.

That said, Smith is right in that his on field game needs to get much better. He was 21-for-34 for 212 touchdowns with a touchdown pass and two lost fumbles. There’s plenty of room to improve on that performance.
