Jerry Jones on Cowboys quarterback decision: ‘I don’t have any idea’

Those of us who have covered the NFL for a while are usually thrown off when Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn’t have an answer.

Whether we agree with what he has to say all the time isn’t the point. Jones usually finds a way to draw his own conclusion to what’s happening surrounding his team.

That obviously doesn’t seem to be the case regarding the Cowboys’ quarterback situation. When asked about any timeline the team might have to resolve the quarterback quandary in Dallas, Jones didn’t seem to have much of an answer.

“I don’t have any idea, no one does as to what the situation will be a game or games down the road,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday (h/t the Star Telegram).

Jones and the Cowboys are facing increased pressure to name rookie Dak Prescott the starter, even when Tony Romo returns from the back injury he suffered during the preseason.

It’s even gotten to the point where teammates seem to support the idea of keeping Prescott under center.

And for good reason.

Despite this, Jones doesn’t appear willing to tip his hand. Heck, he honestly might not even know the outcome of the quarterback situation as of yet.

“We don’t have any idea. The main thing is we’re all looking at the same music and we all feel the same thing,” Jones continued. “The team is positive with each other. We feel like we can make mistakes and overcome them. Everybody feels good about all of what we’re doing.”

Winners of five consecutive with Prescott at the helm, Dallas finds itself in first place in the NFC East and just a half game behind the Minnesota Vikings for the best record in football.

In addition to teammates showing support for Prescott keeping the job, at least one Cowboys legend has thrown his support behind that idea (more on that here).

Whether this will play a role in the Cowboys’ decision remains to be seen. There’s something to say about not fixing a good thing. And the Cowboy shave been excellent with Prescott under center.

There’s also this whole unwritten rule about not losing your job to injury. Though, that’s pretty much been thrown out the window in recent seasons around the NFL.

Ultimately, the Cowboys will have to make a decision here soon. Romo is due back at some point in the not-so-distant future. Jones knows a decision must be made. But he’s also keeping his options open. Let’s just hope the Cowboys actually have a plan behind the scenes.
