WTA roundup: Banner day for Britain in Nottingham

Britain’s Jodie Burrage, Harriet Dart and Katie Boulter all advanced to the quarterfinals with victories Thursday at the Rothesay Open in Nottingham, England.

Burrage upset No. 3 seed Magda Linette of Poland 7-5, 6-3 and Dart knocked off No. 5 seed Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine 6-0, 7-5, while Boulter eliminated Ukraine’s Daria Snigur 7-5, 6-3.

American Elizabeth Mandlik completed the upset-filled day with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 defeat of No. 7 Camila Giorgi of Italy in two hours, 26 minutes. Mandlik took advantage of 20 double faults by Giorgi.

No seeded players remain in the field.

Libema Open

Unseeded Slovakian Viktoria Hruncakova fought off nine set points and pulled off a 7-6 (6), 6-3 stunner against sixth-seeded Canadian Bianca Andreescu in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

No. 4 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win against Australia’s Kimberly Birrell. Alexandrova’s next opponent is Emina Bektas, who defeated fellow American Sachia Vickery 6-4, 6-4.

Swiss teenager Celine Naef, 17, rallied to beat No. 8 seed Caty McNally 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Ranked No. 202 in the world, Naef will face top seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in the quarterfinals.
