The University of Wisconsin–Green Bay is reportedly hiring sports talk radio host Doug Gottlieb as the new Green Bay Phoenix’s men’s basketball coach for the 2024-’25 season.

Gottlieb, age 48, was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin but played basketball in California. Following stints with three different teams – Notre Dame, Golden West and Oklahoma State – Gottlieb went undrafted in the 2000 NBA Draft.

The 6-foot-1 point guard bounced around with various small pro basketball leagues across the glove, including the Oklahoma Storm (2000), Russia’s Ural Great Perm (2001) and the Stade Clermontois BA in the second division of the French basketball league. He began his career in broadcasting as a co-host on a sports talk show in Oklahoma City in 2002.

Gottlieb’s lone coaching experience came in the 2009 and 2017 Maccabiah Games, when he helped coach Team USA along with Bruce Pearl. However, Gottlieb has pursued various head-coaching vacancies in college over the years.

As reported by Ellie French of Fox 11 News, Green Bay offered Gottlieb its head coach position on Tuesday and the sports radio talk show host accepted the offer. The hiring has been confirmed by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, who reports that the two sides are finalizing a contract agreement.

Importantly, per Scott Venci of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is believed to be allowing Gottlieb to keep doing his radio show for Fox Sports. Green Bay also interviewed Gottlieb for its coaching search last year.

“UWGB was impressed with him during his initial interview last year, so much so that he survived longer than some established head coaches and assistant coaches.”

Sundance Wicks, who Green Bay hired as its college basketball coach last season, left the team this spring to take over as Wyoming’s basketball coach. An official announcement from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is expected this week.
