Wednesday started with the Los Angeles Dodgers preparing for suspensions after what we saw unfold against the Astros in Houston the evening before.

Hours before first pitch, that’s exactly what happened. Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly was suspended by MLB for eight games for throwing at Houston star Alex Bregman and taunting his teammate, Carlos Correa. Manager Dave Roberts was also handed a one-game suspension.

Nearly five hours into their game against Houston late Wednesday night, the Dodgers got the last laugh. It came in the form of unlikely hero Edwin Rios, who had four career homers before stepping to the plate against against Cy Sneed with the game tied at two in the 13th.

Talk about the biggest hit of the young man’s short career. Dennis Santana would come out in the bottom of the 13th and preserve the 4-2 win for Los Angeles.

Extra inning games this early in a truncated season are not fun. Given the backdrop of the Dodgers-Astros rivalry, that’s magnified even further.

The good news for Los Angeles is that it culminated in a win that saw two youngsters step up when the team needed it the most.
