San Antonio Spurs to sit Victor Wembanyama for rest of summer

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft is done for the summer. Victor Wembanyama will not suit up for the remainder of the Summer League in Las Vegas after making an appearance in two games, it was announced on Monday.

It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Even before Summer League play started in Vegas, indications were that the Spurs had a plan to take it slow with the French sensation. After two games, he’s now done.

“I know I got to talk with Pop,” Wembanyama said after Sunday’s game. “I’m going to listen to what he’s going to say, but I’m ready to make any sacrifice for the team and give 100 percent.”

After struggling Friday evening in his Summer League debut (2-of-13 shooting), Wembanyama performed at a high level on Sunday. He tallied 27 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks in a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Said performance was enough for San Antonio. The team saw what it wanted to see in Las Vegas and didn’t want to risk potential injury as it relates to the generational talent.

As for the youngster, he’s glad all of this hoopla is behind him. Wemby simply wants to focus on basketball, which will come during training camp in September. Until then, he seems to be more than happy about being out of the spotlight.

“This past month, I think basketball wasn’t even 50% of my schedule. I can’t stand it. I know it’s a special moment in my life, but I’m just glad it’s over honestly. I just want to hoop, workout and lift,” Victor Wembanyama said after Sunday’s game.
