In November, Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule stated that landing a top quarterback recruit via the transfer portal costs anywhere from $1 million to $1.5M. Based on Nebraska’s upcoming prospect visiting schedule, it looks like the Cornhuskers may be willing to pay the price.
According to Max Olson of The Athletic, Nebraska is set to host two Ohio State Buckeyes who have entered the transfer portal this week.
One is QB Kyle McCord, a five-star recruit, according to 247Sports. McCord spent two seasons backing up now Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud in Ohio. Then, at the start of the 2023 season, McCord found himself competing with Devin Brown to be the Buckeyes’ starting QB.
It wasn’t until the team’s season opener before McCord was officially named Ohio State’s starting QB, but even then, coach Ryan Day said the competition was far from over. Two games later, McCord was named the starter for the rest of the season.
Kyle McCord’s stats (2023): 66.4 comp. rate, 2,899 passing yards, 24 TD, 6 INT
McCord started all 12 games, leading the Buckeyes to a 12-1 record, and Ohio State’s offense scored 32.8 PPG, good for 33rd in the nation. Yet, that was a steep drop-off from the season before, when Stroud led the second-highest-scoring offense in college football.
In Ohio State’s final game, coming against Michigan, McCord struggled. He completed just 60 percent of his passes for 271 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Buckeyes’ 30-24 loss to their Big Ten rivals.
After the loss to Michigan, Coach Day revealed that he wasn’t willing to commit to starting McCord in Ohio State’s upcoming matchup in the Cotton Bowl Classic. A day later, McCord announced he was entering the transfer portal.
Now, Nebraska could have a chance at getting McCord to commit to playing for the Cornhuskers in 2024. He has three years of college eligibility left. In addition to McCord visiting Nebraska, Buckeyes receiver Julian Fleming will also join him.
