TCU starts slow before overwhelming Houston Christian

TCU put four scorers in double figures and warmed up midway through the first half en route to walloping visiting Houston Christian 101-64 in Fort Worth, Texas, on Monday night.

Emanuel Miller scored 19 points, and Micah Peavy and Jameer Nelson Jr. chipped in 15 apiece for TCU (6-0), which forced the Huskies into 24 turnovers and converted them into 34 points. Nelson added 10 assists and was one of three Horned Frogs players with at least three steals.

Jay Alvarez scored 21 points on 10-of-20 shooting for Houston Christian (0-5), which fell apart after a strong first nine minutes. The Huskies shot 42.2 percent from the floor while the Horned Frogs feasted on layups and dunks to hit 58.2 percent. They led the visitors in fastbreak points 36-8.

TCU led by 22 points at the half and Houston Christian was unable to muster any sort of run from there.

Instead, Trevian Tennyson’s layup pushed the lead past 30 for the first time with just under 14 minutes left in the game.

JaKobe Coles added 12 points for TCU and Chigozie Achara scored 10 for Houston Christian.

The Huskies held their own early on, leading by as many as eight when Tristan Moore hit a 3-pointer with just under 14 minutes left in the first half. They still led by six with 12:11 remaining on a trey by Alvarez, but the Horned Frogs quickly took over, helped by 13 turnovers by the Huskies in the final 11 minutes of the half.

TCU put up a 16-2 burst and took the lead for good on four straight points by Miller. Nelson capped the run with a fastbreak layup after a steal by Avery Anderson III, who had four for the game, pushing the lead to 31-23 with 5:48 left in the half.

The Horned Frogs closed the half with a 20-2 spurt to lead 51-29. Miller and Nelson each had nine in the burst. Miller led TCU with 13 in the half, and Nelson and Peavy added 11 apiece. The Frogs shot 60 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes.

Alvarez led Houston Christian with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting at the half, while the team shot 39.3 percent.
