One of the biggest non-basketball stories of the 2016 NBA Finals was the epic flop that was Stephen Curry’s Under Armor “Chef Curry” shoes.
They were endlessly ridiculed for looking like old man shoes or nursing shoes, and of course Curry never wore them in a game.
The Golden State Warriors star point guard finally revealed the reason he never defended his brand on the court in an interview with ESPN’s Darren Rovell.
“He revealed for the first time Saturday that he was ready to wear them for Game 4, but was talked out of it by Warriors general manager Bob Myers and his agent Jeff Austin, who were concerned about the low cut given Curry’s history of ankle issues.”
Now, Curry’s health is a legitimate concern, and his ankle injury history is well known.
Funny enough, as much as the shoes were mocked on social media, they’ve reportedly sold well. One wonders how well they would have sold, however, if Curry had suffered a bad ankle injury wearing his own shoes.
With that in mind, it seems not wearing them was a smart move, both from a business and a basketball perspective.
