Silence doesn’t mean Dolphins defensive coordinator is safe

The Miami Dolphins haven’t fired defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle, but the silence doesn’t mean interim coach Dan Campbell has made his final decision.

According to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, Campbell is still working on prospective changes to the staff.

Even before the Dolphins fired former head coach Joe Philbin, reports emerged detailing dissatisfaction from Miami defenders about Coyle’s scheme.

After being touted as a potential No. 1 defense—particularly due to the signing of tackle Ndamukong Suh—the Dolphins have opened the year as the third-worst unit in the league. The offense hasn’t been stellar either, but it’s not easy to win when Coyle’s side of the football surrenders 25 points per game.

Replacing a head coach and defensive coordinator in the middle of the year certainly wouldn’t be easy, and firing Coyle doesn’t immediately solve Miami’s issues. Star defensive end Cameron Wake is battling an injury, opposing quarterbacks aren’t being pressured regularly and the depth is lacking.

But if the Dolphins want to start cleaning house, Campbell might want to sweep Coyle out the door before Miami takes on the Tennessee Titans in Week 6.
