It was back in September that former NFL player Sergio Brown went missing after his mother was found dead in Illinois.

At that point, there were not a ton of details on Brown’s involvement in the death or anything else of real substance.

We now have more information on this courtesy of CNN. The outlet reported on Wednesday that Brown has been taken into custody in Southern California in connection with his mother’s death.

Brown was previously seen in Mexico partying following his mother’s death. As CNN reports, he was extradited on Tuesday and taken into custody by US law enforcement officials after a warrant was issued for the former Notre Dame star’s arrest. He’ll be transported to Illinois.

“Mexican law enforcement officers have known Brown’s whereabouts since at least September 19, the source said, and deported him after authorities in Illinois finally obtained an arrest warrant pertaining to the death of Brown’s mother.”

Authorities discovered Myrtle Brown’s body on September 16 after relatives alerted them that they have been unable to contact her. Brown’s body was then found near a creek roughly 11 miles from Chicago.

According to TMZ Sports, Sergio Brown is facing first degree murder charges in Illinois.

Brown, 35, played seven seasons in the NFL from 2010-16 after signing as an undrafted free agent with the new England Patriots following a stellar career with Notre Dame.

He spent two seasons with the New England Patriots, three with the Indianapolis Colts and one each with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills, recording a combined 144 tackles and one interception.

The state of Illinois repealed the death penalty back in 2011, meaning that Brown faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if found guilty in his mother’s murder.
