A new report claims that both the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays are likely landing spots for the top power hitter left in MLB free agency.

The San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays entered the offseason in very different but similar positions. While Toronto had a productive season and nearly won 90 games, they could not overcome the powers in the American League East, the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays. The sub-.500 Giants had similar twin mountains in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2023 National League West.

That is why both teams needed to be active this offseason not only to improve their rosters from last year but be able to compete with the highly competitive teams in their division. However, neither organization has made a notable move on the free agent of trade markets so far. But that could soon change based on a new report from MLB Network league insider Jon Morosi.

On Monday, the veteran insider claimed that both teams are a very good fit and could be serious contenders for the top slugger left in free agency, JD Martinez.

“We talked before about where he could fit and I still have the Giants as a fit for him,” Morosi said. “I look at the Toronto Blue Jays as well. There has been some talk about the Blue Jays potentially still wanting to add some power bats. … I think adding a veteran player like JD Martinez fits very well in Toronto.”

Despite turning 36 last season, the six-time All-Star was very productive in his lone season for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He posted 33 home runs and drove in 102 RBIs while also scoring 61 runs in just 112 games last season. Martinez would be a notable upgrade over what both teams got from Bradon Belt and Joc Pederson in their DH spots last season.
